McGuire Program for Clinician Scientists

The McGuire Program for Clinician Scientists creates a pathway for established periodontists in private practice who want to become meaningfully engaged in high-quality clinical research without leaving private practice.

The program begins with the Intensive Seminar in Practice-Based Clinical Research, a two-and-a-half-day immersion and the principal entry point into the clinician-scientist development pathway. Its purpose is not to teach someone how to become a researcher in two days, but to answer a more fundamental question: What does excellent practice-based research really look like, and what does it take to accomplish it successfully within a busy private practice? Participants learn directly from experienced investigators and research professionals who design, conduct, manage, analyze, publish, and translate clinical research into practice. The Seminar provides an intensive, real-world view of the scientific rigor, infrastructure, collaboration, and commitment required to conduct meaningful research in the private-practice setting.

Seminar participants may then apply for the McGuire Fellowship for Clinician Scientists, a structured, year-long program combining mentorship, experiential learning, and participation in active practice-based research. The Fellowship is designed to help practicing periodontists develop the knowledge, judgment, infrastructure, and collaborative skills necessary to become clinician-scientists and investigators within their own practices—and, over time, leaders, mentors, and lifelong stewards of evidence-based patient care.

The AAP Foundation is grateful to the donors who have provided the foundational support to launch the McGuire Program for Clinician Scientists, including Dr. Michael K. McGuire, his family, and grateful patients of Perio Health Professionals in Houston, Texas. Continued philanthropic support will help build the program’s long-term foundation and ensure that this opportunity can be sustained for future generations of clinician-scientists.

Dr. McGuire is the founder of The McGuire Institute (iMc), a nonprofit practice-based research network that brings together investigators in private practices across the United States to conduct rigorous clinical research in real-world practice settings. The Institute and its network will play an important role in the program, with experienced investigators and research professionals contributing to the Intensive Seminar and providing mentorship, site-based experiences, and exposure to active clinical research for McGuire Fellows.

Michael K. McGuire, DDS
“Every professional life reaches a moment when success begins to be measured differently — not by what we have accomplished, but by what will remain after we are gone. The McGuire Fellowship is an answer to that question. It rests on a simple conviction: the future of our profession will be shaped by the people who ask the next important questions — clinicians found and developed within everyday practice, where research reveals what is clinically meaningful, reproducible, and sustainable in the lives of real patients. Through mentorship and immersion in real investigation, the Fellowship develops exceptional periodontists into thoughtful investigators, generous mentors, and faithful stewards of evidence-based care. Research is the mechanism; people are the multiplier. Its true measure will not be the studies completed or the recognition earned, but the generations of clinicians who go on to ask better questions, mentor others, and leave the profession stronger than they found it. The best discoveries are still ahead.”

    Selection

A select cohort of applicants will be chosen each year to participate in the Intensive Seminar in Practice-Based Clinical Research. Following completion of the Seminar, participants will be eligible to apply for the McGuire Fellowship for Clinician Scientists. The Fellowship will launch with a single Fellow in its inaugural year, allowing the program to establish and refine its individualized mentorship, experiential learning, and practice-based research model. As the program matures, the number of Fellows may expand, with the goal of supporting up to four Fellows annually.
